Dr. Johnson's career has focused on improving access to quality healthcare for underserved populations using an asset based approach that leverages existing resources to strengthen community services. As part of that effort he developed ECHO-Chicago, primarily an urban focused telehealth program for capacity building at the community level using high grade videoconferencing technology to build a virtual conference room to deliver case based learning to primary care providers in the diagnose and management of common chronic complex health conditions.
Dr. Johnson completed his training in 1986 and is boarded in Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Disease. His clinical care focuses on inpatient and outpatient infectious diseases. He is Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago Medicine, in the Department of Pediatrics where he serves as Vice Chair for Clinical Services, Section Chief of Academic Pediatrics and Interim Section Chief for Pediatric Infectious Diseases. He practices at Comer Children’s Hospital, Edward Hospital, and Mount Sinai Hospital. At University of Chicago Medicine since 2007, his focus includes developing and improving community-based pediatric general and specialty services in underserved communities. From 1999-2007 Dr. Johnson served as Chair of Pediatrics for Chicago’s Mount Sinai Health System. Throughout his career he has enjoyed teaching medical students and residents. He currently serves on the board of Children’s Home & Aid and is the board treasurer for the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatric. Dr. Johnson is a native Chicagoan.
